Elgato’s TV tuner lets you stream live TV to your iPad 2
TweetIt has taken Elgato almost a year to experiment its live TV tuner for the iPad, including having to endure hurdles such as streaming programs that already broadcast online. The company has unveiled EyeTV Mobile, a TV tuner that can be plugged into your iPad 2′s 30-pin connector, and bring in broadcast television. When its antenna is collapsed, the small, USB charger-like tuner should fit comfortably right at the palm of your hand. The antenna draws in signals via the DVB-T standard; in fact, this product was suitable only for European market. (Now Elgato targets the broader Asian markets as well.)
Besides, Elgato has an impressive EyeTV iOS app (whose interface is fairly much similar as the HDHomeRun app for iPad), that facilitates streaming TV to your iPad – that’s if the broadcast is online. Of course to draw in live TV over the air you’ll require a TV-tuner, and this has been one of the major setbacks for Apple’s popular tablet. Elgato’s promise is that before the end of September, the lack of live broadcast TV will become a thing of the past. The tuner should also draw in MPEG 2 streams over DVB-T, although we doubt if it’ll work with DVB-T2 broadcasts like the Freeview HD. Stay tuned, more details coming soon.
